One of the essential things to do in Loreto is strolling along the Malecon.
This seaside boardwalk is not particularly long at just 1.6 km / 1 mi. But it offers a beautiful place to walk with some incredible ocean views.
- We love it when coastal towns in Mexico have a malecon. They are always a hub of life and Loreto’s is no exception.
- One of the best hikes you can do (and one of the best things to do in Loreto in our opinion!) is Tabor Canyon.
Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto, or Loreto Bay National Park, is a large protected marine area off the coast of Loreto in the Sea of Cortez.
Declared a national park in 1996, the area is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The waters are rich with marine life of all shapes and sizes. A number of whale species, sea lions, dolphins, rays, turtles, an abundance of fish and small critters call the park home.
The protected bay is home to five uninhabited islands:
- Isla Coronado
- Isla del Carmen
- Isla Danzante
- Isla Montserra
- Isla Santa Catarina
We will enjoy visiting the island tours, where you’ll spend a few hours on land. Isla Coronado is the most popular island to visit.
It’s also possible to do island-hopping combo tours, where you’ll spend the day mainly enjoying the bay from a boat, looking for marine life, snorkelling.
- one of the lunches we will have on our whale watching tour with a marine biologist.
- Whale-watching tours from Loreto are a world-class experience. Every Spring, the Loreto National Marine Park hosts the most giant creatures on earth, Blue Whales. On this tour we can also see Fin Whales, Humpbacks, dolphins, mantas, and other wildlife and you will have a front row seat.
We will also visit the San Javier Mission and check out the mountain oasis cave paintings which is just outside of Loreto.
- the top things to do in Loreto, Baja California Sur is to visit San Javier Mission. This beautifully restored mission is about an hour’s drive from the city and is home to one of the most well-preserved missions along the peninsula.
- Many of the missions in Baja failed because they were unable to adapt and cultivate food in Baja’s hot, dry, and extreme climate. Mission San Javier, was the exception.
This mission was able to thrive because it was located next to a natural spring. The Padres and the “converted” natives grew food through acequias (irrigation ditches) in the land nearby along with olive trees and vines for winemaking.
- The Spanish occupied the mission until the early 1800s, abandoning it after the Spanish fled Mexico in 1817. Sitting vacant for nearly a century meant the Mission was in poor shape at the start of the millennia. But in the late 1900s, Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History helped reconstruct the building.
